Abstract

Lymphedema is caused by the lymphatic vessel dysfunction owing to microbial infection, inflammation or lymph node dissection. Recently, thermal therapy using a Far Infrared Ray (FIR) and aromatherapy has been recognized as a medicine therapies. Especially, FIR treatment has been widely applied to the patients suffering from body fluid circulation system related diseases, such as hypertension, lymphedema, cardiovascular disease, ischemia and so on. Also, the pure essential oils (EOs) extracted from the plants have been regarded as another therapy against microbial infection, inflammation, oxidative stress, etc. Despite of these two therapies being used actively, the combination treatment of FIR and EO which is expecting the synergetic effects on the lymphedema has not been studied yet. Thus, the main goal of this research is to analyze and abridge the previous studies for each therapy, and suggests a new hypothesis for the combined therapy on lymphedema. In conclusion, FIR therapy and essential oils improve the risk factors of Lymphedema through the regulation of specific cytokines and enzymes influencing to the chronic inflammation and blood flow. Additionally, essential oils from the plant extracts inhibit the activity of the micro-organisms including Staphylococcus aureus and Group A Streptococcus. Hence, if these two therapies can be properly applied together, the synergetic effects on the improvement of body swelling symptom can be maximized.
